History

Grand Lagoon Yacht Club was founded on February 15, 1968 by about 50 families working together to provide a safe and place for local kids and to get local kids interested in water activities.  In the beginning there were no boats and very little money.  Volunteers worked evenings and weekends to build a small fleet of boats and picnic tables.  A small house near the water was renovated and used as a clubhouse.

Hurricanes have been an integral part of GLYC history and occasions for facility improvements. The docks and piers have been rebuilt and strengthened several times.  On September 12, 1979, Hurricane Fredrick substantially damaged the facilities.  GLYC was built bigger and better in its current location.  Employees were hired and membership grew.  On September 16, 2004, Hurricane Ivan devastated the facilities and boats.  During the following Spring the building was rebuilt.  During the interim a temporary structure was used and that temporary structure is now the Sail Locker.  Members who were here for that period, have fond memories of getting together during this time at the temporary building with campfires, music and limited food and beverage.  On September 16, 2020 Hurricane Sally damaged the piers and most of the boats and the sail locker.  Once again members are joining together to rebuild.

The club remains vibrant and growing with a mix of new members and “old hands.”  GLYC continues to focus on encouraging young people to participate in water activities, with annual events like the Junior Sail Camp and the Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo.  The club also provides a wide variety of activities for adults, ranging from casual Wednesday night sailing, to Bunko and Tai Chi.
